Diagnosis of Difficulty Starting and Black Exhaust Smoke in Forklifts

When a Forklift engine experiences difficulty starting accompanied by significant black smoke from the exhaust, the root cause is incomplete combustion of diesel fuel, resulting in unburned carbon particles being emitted with the exhaust gases. Diagnosis requires systematic inspection of the fuel, intake, injection, and cylinder compression systems.

Causes and Key Diagnostic Points:

1. Diesel Quality:

Prioritize checking whether the diesel fuel is of poor quality. Contaminated or incorrectly graded diesel can lead to poor atomization, making combustion difficult.

2. Intake System:

Inspect the air filter for clogging and ensure the intake ducts are unobstructed. Insufficient air intake disrupts the air-fuel mixture ratio, resulting in excess fuel and inadequate combustion.

3. Injection Timing:

If the injection pump’s fuel supply timing is set too early, diesel is injected into a cylinder with insufficient pressure and temperature. This prolongs the pre-ignition period and worsens combustion.

4. Injector Malfunction:

Poor needle valve sealing or a valve stuck in the open position can cause dripping or poor atomization, leading to unburned fuel droplets being expelled. Verify the injector’s opening pressure and atomization quality.

5. Low Injection Pressure:

Insufficient pressure directly results in poor diesel atomization, producing oversized fuel droplets that cannot combust completely.

6. Excessive Fuel Supply:

Incorrect calibration of the injection pump, leading to an excessive fuel supply, introduces too much fuel into the cylinder, severely worsening combustion. This is a common cause of black smoke.

7. Insufficient Cylinder Compression:

Worn piston rings, cylinder liners, or poorly sealed valves can cause low cylinder pressure. Inadequate temperature and pressure at the end of compression make it difficult to ignite and atomize the diesel fuel.

Summary:

During diagnosis, adhere to the principle of progressing from external to internal and from simple to complex. Begin by inspecting the fuel and filters, then gradually move to core components such as injection timing, the injection pump, and cylinder compression.
